Sadly, there have been a lot of crashes lately that have claimed the lives of police officers in Pennsylvania. We recently told you about an officer in Philadelphia who was killed in a wrong-way accident on Interstate 95. Another officer was recently killed when a police chase turned deadly.
A Millville police officer died in the car accident at approximately 2:15 a.m. one recent morning. His police vehicle reportedly collided with a car driven by a 23-year-old man who was fleeing from officers who were seeking to apprehend him for a variety of vehicle violations.
The accident occurred at the intersection of Broad Street and North Third Street. The officer was on duty, and involved in the pursuit. The motorist has been charged with causing the wrongful death of the officer, who had worked for the police department for eight years.
Specific charges brought against him included vehicular homicide, attempting to elude the police, and aggravated manslaughter, among other charges. The motorist was himself injured in the collision and was being treated at a local hospital following the crash.
The crash also injured a second police officer, who was reported to be in stable condition after the accident. The officer who lost his life in the crash is survived by his wife, who also serves as a police officer in Millville, and by his son, who is 2 years old. A policeman's benevolent organization has established a fund to raise money for the officer's family.
