Car accidents happen. Whether a person is a cause of an accident or isn't, they have a right to assume they won't be physically assaulted for their actions. Unfortunately, that's not always the case.
A man is dead after a teen punched him in the head following a minor car accident. The man, a teacher and respected community member, accidentally hit an eight-months-pregnant teenager with his car, which prompted a skirmish that led to his wrongful death.
The man was driving at a slow rate of speed when he accidentally struck the 16-year-old girl, who apparently stepped in front of his vehicle after he had stopped at a stop sign at 30th and Berkley. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, he got out of the vehicle to help the young woman, who had sustained minor injuries.
The pregnant teen's 16-year-old boyfriend arrived on the scene moments later. At some point he allegedly punched the teacher in the face. Witnesses say they saw the assault. The blow knocked the man unconscious, and police say that when they arrived, the man was incoherent.
The injury, which qualified as blunt force trauma, apparently prompted a brain aneurysm, which killed the teacher after he was admitted to the hospital. He died less than two hours after the accident occurred.
The teen acknowledged punching the man, who was a Vietnam veteran. He was charged with murder and was arraigned last week. According to the Inquirer, a prosecutor says of the victim, "Out of a situation that could have been a minor incident, he ended up dead."
